There is some good news for Americans, Canadians, and Australians planning to travel to Brazil before April as the country has postponed its plans to impose visa requirements for the US, Canada, and Australia, albeit temporarily, as the country remains one of the top tourism destinations in the world.

While Brazil is a country known for not imposing visa requirements, the country does have them in place for three countries, namely the US, Canada, and Australia, as these three countries have also imposed visa restrictions on Brazilians. However, the South American tourism giant scrapped the visa requirements in 2019 under then-President Jair Bolsonaro in an effort to support the tourism industry.

However, now that Brazil is under a different administration, President Lula has announced he is bringing back these visa restrictions, which were supposed to take effect on January 10. However, Lula's office announced that these restrictions will be postponed, according to the Associated Press.

This temporary postponement of visa restrictions will be in place until April 10. The Brazilian government stated that it was still finalizing the new visa system and wanted to avoid implementing it close to the high season, which usually happens during the New Year's celebrations and Carnival festivities in February.

Tens of thousands of tourists usually come to Brazil during the first quarter, which is usually winter in the northern hemisphere, for the warmer weather in the country, as well as the world-famous Carnival.

Lula reinstated the visa requirements a few months after he took office last year. The list of countries that should have had their visa restrictions reinstated originally included Japan, but the country made a deal with Brazil to ease travel provisions between the two, thereby avoiding having visa restrictions imposed on its citizens.

Brazil Still Negotiating Visa Restrictions With US, Canada, Australia

Despite the Brazilian government announcing visa restrictions for these countries in April, it is still negotiating with them so it would not have to impose these restrictions.

According to AFAR, the Lula administration stated it would continue "negotiating visa exemption agreements with these three countries, based on principles of reciprocity and equality between states." This means that there is still a possibility that the upcoming visa restrictions could still be waived if the United States, Australia, and Canada were to stop their visa restrictions for Brazilian citizens as well.

However, should these talks fail, the restrictions beginning in April do seem inevitable, as the Brazilian government has launched an official website regarding visas.

Citizens from these three countries just need to provide the required information, pay the $80.90 fee, and once accepted, they must download their eVisa and probably also print it out.

Requirements include a passport that is valid until the Brazil trip ends, a completed online visa application form, a Passport-style photo (2" x 2", white background), a confirmed round trip reservation, a printed bank statement showing transactions for the last 30 days and a showing balance of US$2,000.00 or proof of income or credit card statement.
