Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, once considered Donald Trump's main rival in the Republican presidential primary, has dropped his 2024 presidential campaign, according to CNN.

The announcement, via a video posted online, follows DeSantis' disappointing second-place finish in the recent Iowa Republican caucuses.

DeSantis expressed his dedication to the Republican cause, endorsing former President Donald Trump in the video.

"I signed a pledge to support the Republican nominee and will honor that pledge. He has my endorsement," DeSantis stated.

The Florida Governor acknowledged past disagreements with Trump, particularly on the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the elevation of Anthony Fauci, but emphasized Trump's superiority over the current President, Joe Biden.

The departure of DeSantis leaves former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley as the primary alternative to Trump in the race.

However, with limited time to consolidate support and catch up to the frontrunner, Haley faces a challenging path.

High Expectations and Harsh Realities for DeSantis

A year ago, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had ambitious plans for his 2024 presidential campaign, envisioning triumphs in Iowa and New Hampshire to secure the GOP nomination, POLITICO noted.

However, after a disappointing second-place showing in Iowa and poor polling in New Hampshire, DeSantis announced his exit from the presidential race and endorsed former President Donald Trump.

In a statement, DeSantis cited the lack of a clear path to victory as the reason for stepping down.

The end of DeSantis' presidential aspirations is a setback for a candidate who aimed to leverage his success in Florida to become a national figure within the Republican Party.

Despite his record and substantial fundraising, DeSantis faced challenges in connecting with voters personally and struggled to shake off negative perceptions.

Critics point to political missteps, funding mismanagement, and a failure to surround himself with experienced advisers as contributing factors to DeSantis' decline in the race.

His inner circle was criticized for lacking national experience and being disconnected from the broader political landscape.

Dennis Lennox, a Republican operative, cited these issues as examples of political malpractice.

Initially seen as a rising conservative star, DeSantis' 2024 presidential campaign faltered as he faced competition from Trump, who ultimately garnered stronger support among Republican voters.

The former president's enduring popularity was a key factor that DeSantis failed to overcome.

Whit Ayres, a pollster who worked on DeSantis' gubernatorial campaign in 2018, noted that DeSantis struggled to capture a distinct market of "Maybe Trump" voters. This segment figures like Nikki Haley successfully tapped into.

The unexpected influence of Trump's legal challenges, including criminal indictments, further solidified his support among Republicans, making it challenging for DeSantis to carve out a niche in the crowded field.

Ron DeSantis had aligned himself with Trump early in the race, expressing skepticism about legal actions against the former president.

Donald Trump Reacts to Ron DeSantis' Endorsement

Former President Donald Trump expressed his honor at receiving Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' endorsement, Fox News reported.

"I look forward to working together with him to beat Joe Biden, who is the worst and most corrupt president in the history of our country," Trump said.

DeSantis justified his endorsement of Trump by emphasizing the need to avoid reverting to the "old Republican guard" represented by Nikki Haley.

With Trump leading in the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire, the former president acknowledged DeSantis' endorsement and retired the nickname "Ron DeSanctimonious," previously used during the 2024 presidential campaign.

Ron DeSantis' endorsement marks a significant development in the Republican primary race, further solidifying Trump's position as the frontrunner.
