Las Vegas Raiders are set to bolster their coaching staff with the addition of former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury as the new offensive coordinator, CBS Sports reports.

Kingsbury, 44, was chosen over other notable candidates, including current UCLA head coach Chip Kelly.

Antonio Pierce, who assumed defensive responsibilities mid-season, seeks to enhance the team's offensive prowess with this key appointment.

Pierce, in a half-joking manner on January 24, expressed a desire for a "minimum of 24 points" per game from the new Raiders offensive coordinator.

Kliff Kingsbury, expected to fill the role, previously averaged 23.6 points during his coaching stint with the Cardinals, reaching a high of 26.4 points in 2021.

The Raiders, contemplating a shift from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, aim to secure a new quarterback, potentially through free agency, trade, or the draft, with a need to move up from their current No. 13 slot for a top prospect.

Kliff Kingsbury's Coaching Journey

After parting ways with the Arizona Cardinals at the end of the 2022 regular season, Kingsbury took on the role of offensive analyst at USC.

During his six-year tenure with the Cardinals, he achieved a record of 28-37-1, according to Arizona Sports.

The Texas native commenced his coaching career in 2008 as a quality control coach for the Houston Cougars, later climbing the ranks to co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

He served as the offensive coordinator for Texas A&M in 2011 before making his head-coaching debut with Texas Tech in 2013.

His journey continued with a brief stint as USC's offensive coordinator, followed by his entry into the NFL coaching arena with the Arizona Cardinals.

Known for his creative play-calling and a personalized version of the Air Raid offense, Kingsbury brings a dynamic approach to the Raiders' offensive strategy.

His system emphasizes a robust run game, setting the stage for play-action and deep shots.

Despite his innovative approach, Kingsbury's offenses have faced challenges in the second halves of seasons.

He replaces interim Raiders offensive coordinator Bo Hardegree, who assumed play-calling duties after the dismissal of Josh McDaniels during the previous season.

Challenges and Expectations for the Raiders

The Raiders' offensive struggles were evident in the 2022 season, finishing with the sixth-worst unit in yards per game (289.5) and the 10th-worst in points per game (19.5), per ESPN.

To address these concerns, Kliff Kingsbury's expertise is anticipated to bring a fresh perspective to play-calling and offensive execution.

With offensive stars like Davante Adams, Josh Jacobs, Hunter Renfrow, Michael Mayer, and Jakobi Meyers, the team aims to rediscover its offensive prowess.

The goal for the Raiders is to achieve an average of 24 points per game, requiring a total of 408 points in a season, a feat accomplished only three times since their 2002 Super Bowl season.

The team finished the previous season with an 8-9 record, with Antonio Pierce making strategic changes, including benching quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and guiding the team to a 5-4 finish.

In another significant development, former Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis is set to join the Raiders' staff as an assistant head coach, serving as a mentor to Antonio Pierce.

Lewis's advisory role played a crucial part in guiding the team during the latter part of the previous season.
