Lupillo Rivera made headlines when he stood his ground at Murrieta, California, to defend the busloads of undocumented immigrant children that were being transferred to the city.

The Mexican singer was yelled at, spit on and antagonized by immigration opponents, but he will continue to protest them on the Fourth of July if they show up, La Opinion noted.

Rivera just happened to be by the same street the protest was taking place when he realized that people intended to stop the buses that were transporting undocumented immigrant children, most of who are underage. He is frequently in the area, as he lives about 15 minutes away.

"I was passing by the street when I came across the protesters that were in the middle of the street blocking the buses," he said. "Look, I believe that children, all the children in the world, it doesn't matter who they are, are innocent and deserve special care. Why don't you want the children to cross? What does it cost us?"

Based on the treatment he got when protesting, he believes that many are opposed to immigration because of racism.

"Look, they threatened me. Tthey slapped me and they spit in my face, but that doesn't matter," he said. "They spit on me and treated me poorly without knowing who I was, without knowing that I'm an American citizen, without knowing that I have lots of followers on Twitter. If they mistreated me as a citizen, how will they treat these children?"

One of the most shared pictures of Rivera is one with his head slightly tilted upward and a woman yelling in his face. In the picture's caption, he explained that it is Latinos who are seen as gross and fighters.

Rivera is invested in this cause and wants to do whatever he cans, according to People en Español.

"I'm trying to send a direct message, on Facebook, a direct tweet to Barack Obama and that I ask the entire world," he said. "He promised reform and he has not come through."
