According to the health minister, Sonia Gandhi, who fell ill during a debate in Parliament on Monday night, was discharged from the hospital today.

Gandhi, the leader of India's controlling party, the Indian National Congress, checked into the AIIMs hospital late Monday night. She was there for five hours where she underwent multiple medical tests, Ghulam Nabi Azad said.

"She had cough, she had headache," a senior doctor at AIIMS hospital said. "She took medicines after which she felt uneasiness in Parliament. That is why she was here. We put all the test required for such diseases, and we found her normal, and she has left in her own car talking to all the doctors, and thanking all of us."

"She is perfectly fine," Azad said. "There is nothing to worry."

Gandhi, 67, had had a fever for two days prior to the debate in Parliament. The politician, however, still went to the debate where she delivered a speech supporting the UPA's Food Security Bill. The bill aims to provide grain at a lower cost to over 800 million people across India. Gandhi also discussed pet welfare legislation.

The debate lasted for 9 hours in the lower house of Parliament. During the nine hours, Gandhi felt sick and was taken to a hospital by other members of the Congress party and her son Rahul.

"The Congress president has come back," Janardan Dwivedi, party general secretary, said. "She is alright, and her medical check-up has been completed,"

Dwivedi also concluded that the some medicines that Gandhi was taking had negative effects on her, causing her illness.

According to sources at AIIMS, Gandhi, who was exhausted and experiencing chest pain, was taken to the Intensive Care Unity before moving to the cardio-neuro centre.

Gandhi is the widow of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. After his murder, the Italian-born woman began her political career. She led the Congress party to election victories in 2004 and 2009.

The Food Security Bill was passed while Gandhi was in the hospital.
