Samsung will finally reveal its Galaxy Gear smartwatch on September 4. According to Korea Times, the launch will happen in Berlin, Germany.

"The Gear won't have a flexible display. The new device will enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways. It will lead a new trend in smart mobile communications. We are confident that the Gear will add meaningful momentum to the mobile industry," Samsung Executive Vice President Lee Young-hee said in an exclusive interview with Korea Times.

Although Lee did not mention other details about the Galaxy Gear, reports say the smartwatch will still be dependent on smartphones.

According to Information Week, Galaxy Gear is expected to connect to smartphones via Bluetooth and NFC. The Gear will allow various functions such as answering calls, email scanning and text message previewing. It is also noted to be an ideal exercise buddy, enabling real time workout tracking and recording.

Galaxy Gear is Samsung's first plunge into the smartwatch world which Sony, Pebble and Motorola have already penetrated. Motorola, however, no longer offers the MOTOACTV smartwatch. As for the first generation Android compatible Sony SmartWatch, it features messaging through email plugins, a calendar, the ability to receive updates from social networking sites and a music player. It is also highly dependent on smartphones and allows users to choose from the many useful and fun apps available on the Google Play Store.

Pebble is a more or less a similar device - regarding itself as the E-paper watch for iPhone and Android. Like the SmartWatch, Pebble also offers various notification services and is highly customizable through apps.

Should Galaxy Gear be able to set another trend in the smartwatch market, it will be Samsung's second success at introducing a new innovation. The company has had great success in laminating its name on the phablet industry with its introduction of the first Galaxy Note.

Samsung's biggest rival, Apple, is also rumored to release its very own smartwatch in the form of iWatch. Although Apple has not yet confirmed any of the rumors, Information Week says that it might be due for an early 2014 launch.
