A baby was viciously mauled and killed by his step-grandmother's dog in Ohio Sunday afternoon while she was babysitting him for the day, according to The Dayton Daily News.

After the attack, the woman carried the baby to her neighbor's home and the neighbor called police. However, the child was not breathing by the time first responders arrived to the scene, said Chris Williams, the superintendent of investigation for the Dayton police.

Police say the step-grandmother was extremely distraught. She identified the dog as an American Staffordshire terrier, which resembles a pit bull, Williams said. After the attack it was removed from the home by an animal control officer.

Police are investigating, but charges have not been filed against her, Williams said, reports Reuters.

Reverend Victor Lee, a family friend, said that he was told by the family told that the dog jumped over a gate and attacked the baby boy and that his grandmother desperately tried to save him.

"It's a good family and unfortunately this incident has happened so until all the facts are in we just have to bear with it and not spread rumors about what had happened," he said, WDTN reported.

Reports show that the Staffordshire terrier attacked another dog on June 3 as the other was being walked by its owner outside the house.

Even though the beagle was able to escape, it needed 11 staples to its leg, ABC22 reported.

The beagle's owner, Isabelle Crickmore, filed a criminal misdemeanor complaint against the grandmother.

"It just really irks me because this could have been taken care of," Crickmore said.

Despite both incidents, family members described the dog as a "pleasant animal," according to police Sergeant Charles Anderson.
