An 80-year-old Long Beach homeowner said he has no regrets about fatally shooting a woman who claimed to be pregnant after she broke into his home.

Tom Greer says that he walked in as two burglars -- a male and female -- were ransacking his home. When he confronted the intruders, they physically assaulted him and broke his collar bone, he said. Afterwards, he went into another room to grab his firearm and began firing shots. That's when the woman pleaded with him to spare her life, saying that she was with child.

"When I went in there, they tackled me. Both of them jumped up on top of me," Greer told NBC4 on Wednesday.

"I come back and they see me with a gun, and they run," he said.

The man was able to escaped, but the woman died at the scene after being struck by Greer's .22-caliber Smith and Wesson revolver behind his house.

"She says, 'Don't shoot me, I'm pregnant! I'm going to have a baby!' And I shot her anyway," Greer said.

"The lady didn't run as fast as the man, so I shot her in the back twice," Greer added. "She's dead ... but he got away."

The woman, identified as 28-year-old Andrea Miller, did not appear to be pregnant, but an autopsy would determine whether she was, said Long Beach police Chief Jim McDonnell at a news conference, according to the Associated Press.

Both she and the surviving suspect, 26-year-old Gus Adams, were unarmed, but have a history of similar crimes. He was arrested on suspicion of residential burglary and murder because he is accused of being involved in a felony that led to a death, McDonnell said. He is being held on a $1 million bail.

Police said they still deciding whether to press charges against the elderly homeowner.

Because Greer had been burglarized two times before, he says he believed the same suspects were responsible.

"I shot her so that's going to leave a message on his mind for the rest of his life," Greer said.
