Aside from simply investing in sequels to their already successful superhero titles, Marvel decided to branch out to new stories despite the risk it entails. With "Guardians of the Galaxy," the studio went beyond its tried and true formula by adding new elements to their portfolio, The Verge reports.

Director James Gunn said himself that the film is not so much a superhero movie, but more of a space opera, as "Guardians of the Galaxy" aims to top the theater openings in August.

Marvel and Disney Studios will be releasing the film in more than 4,080 theaters, expecting a strong start with at least $65 million this weekend for Marvel Studios' new franchise, according to Hollywood Reporter. There are even those who believe that "Guardians" could hit the $70 million mark or even more. However, it would still be a challenge, considering that the summer box office suffered a steep downturn.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is Marvel's first in-house title that is not part of the Avengers universe. It stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper, who play the roles of the unlikely galactic heroes who are forced to work with each other in a rag-tag group of misfits.

Other stars include Benicio del Toro, Glenn Close, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly and Lee Pace, who plays the powerful Ronan. The team is tasked with protecting a mysterious orb which Peter Quill (Pratt) stumbled upon from Ronan, who plans on using its secret powers for evil.

The film has enjoyed so much hype even before its release that plans for a sequel that will be released in 2017 has already been announced by Marvel and Disney with Gunn to direct once again. The science fiction, fantasy, action and adventure film "Guardians of the Galaxy" is set to be released in theaters on Aug. 1.
