The startup ride-sharing company Uber's CEO Travis Kalanick has just announced that they have hired David Plouffe as their senior vice president for policy and strategy, according to The Huffington Post.

David Plouffe was one of the strategists in the 2008 election campaign of President Barack Obama.

Plouffe will start working at Uber in September and he will be tasked with managing all of the company's global policy as well as its branding efforts, communication and political activities. Kalanick says that Plouffe will be a strategic partner in the global growth of the company.

Speaking about his part in the company, Plouffe said that he welcomes the chance and the challenge. He said that Uber poses a threat to some sectors and he sees that the taxi industry cartel is trying to stand in the way of big change and technology.

He believes that the approach used by the taxi industry will be unvictorius in the end.

Plouffe also said that he wants to make sure that the riders and drivers will not be denied the opportunity to make their choice in transportation.

Available in 170 cities around the world, Uber has undergone so many political battles since 2009, when the company was launched.

Since it directly competed with taxi companies, the regulators tried to shut down Uber. It also faced a battle against regulations imposed by local officials in other cities that did not want the type of service Uber offers.

It seems that now the company is getting used as a political tool. The Republican National Committee is launching a petition to support the company in their effort to appeal to the younger set of urban voters. Earlier the company hired Ashwini Chhabra, who was a former official of the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission to head their policy development and community engagement department.
