After nearly 20 hours, a hostage situation in a suburban home in Chicago came to a peaceful resolution on Wednesday as police were able to bring the hostages to safety and the suspects into custody.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced that the final two children and two women hostages were released from the home in the south suburb of Harvey Wednesday morning. Four other children, ages 1 to 11, were released Tuesday evening.

According to Dart, police broke down the front door and found the two male suspects on the first floor. The hostages, two girls ages 6 and 12, were found on the second level of the house, along with two adult females.

"There had been a lot of tension," said the sheriff, according to NBC Chicago. "Things were changing at different times it just it was the proper time to act. ... We tried everything conceivable to get them to understand that we weren't going away and that this was going to be resolved."

The hostages were taken to the hospital to be examined, while police investigated the home for further weapons and evidence.

It is unknown if there was any relationship between the hostages and the suspects.

The hostage/barricade situation began Tuesday around 12:48 p.m. when police responded to a home burglary in process. Two officers were shot, including Darnell Keel, an 18-year veteran of the force, who's in charge of the department's sexual assault unit. Afterward, the suspect ran into a nearby home and barricaded himself.

Keel "saw a subject with a gun, there was an exchange of gunfire, and [Keel] was shot," said Harvey town spokesman Sean Howard.

The second officer suffered from a minor graze wound and received treatment on the scene.

Howard said that Officer Keel is "doing fine and in good spirits, and he said he wished he could get back out there and help his teammates," Howard said, according to Fox News. "He's a man of faith thanking God that it was just his arm and not something else."
