Roger Federer and Serena Williams moved on to the second round of the 2014 U.S. Open after defeating their respective opponents on Tuesday at the Flushing Meadows in New York.

Federer, who is looking to win his 18th Grand Slam title, scored an impressive straight-set victory against Marinko Matosevic 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4) to jump start his campaign on a bright note.

The 33-year-old tennis star put on a show at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Michael Jordan watched the match from Federer's guest box, and the former world No. 1 admitted that the basketball legend's presence pumped him up during the match.

"It's just amazing having Michael here," Federer, one of the title favorites this year, said after the match via ESPN. "Growing up he was my big sporting idol. Having him here is unbelievably special."

Fourth-seeded David Ferrer, who could face Federer in the semifinals, also advanced to the next round with a 6-1, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win against Damir Dzumhur, while 13th-seeded John Isner scored a 7-6(5), 6-2, 7-6(2) win against Marcos Giron.

On the women's side, top-seeded Serena Williams of the USA cruised to an easy 6-3, 6-1 win over compatriot Taylor Townsend in their first-round showdown.

Third-seeded Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic won against Kristina Mladenovic of France 6-1, 6-0, while eighth-seeded Ana Ivanovic defeated Alison Riske of USA 6-3, 6-0.

U.S. tennis player CiCi Bellis, on the other hand, stole the spotlight from the more-celebrated tennis stars as the 15-year-old scored a huge upset win against 12th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

Bellis became the youngest player to win in a U.S. Open match since 1996, and the tennis teen sensation admitted that he did not expect to win against Cibulkova, who finished second in this year's Australian Open.

"I never thought I'd come out like this," Bellis said on Tuesday via ESPN. "Believing was the No. 1 thing that I had to do today. That's what my coach told me before the match also: Just go out there and believe that you can win."
