Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova kept their title hopes alive, but Venus Williams and Simona Halep were eliminated in the 2014 U.S. Open tennis on Friday at the Flushing Meadows in New York.

Federer marched on to the third round of this year's tournament after scoring a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win against the hard-serving Sam Groth of Australia in their second-round showdown.

Federer, who is looking to win his sixth U.S. Open title and 18th Grand Slam, overcame Groth's big serves, and the second-seeded Swiss admitted after the game that he was monitoring how hard the Aussie's serves were during the match.

"I'm aware of every serve, how hard it is after the point when he goes big, because I think it's interesting and I want to see," Federer said via ESPN. "Sometimes I feel it, as well. I'm like, 'That felt like 138,' and it might be just a couple off. It's the same with my own serve. I can judge it probably [within] a few miles an hour."

With the win, Federer arranged a showdown with Marcel Granollers of Spain, who scored a 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 victory against 25th-seeded Ivo Karlovic.

Meanwhile, Sharapova rolled on to the fourth round after scoring a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set win against 26th-seeded Sabine Lisicki in their third-round match on Friday night.

Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam champion, admitted after the match that she was wary of Lisicki's aggressiveness for the entire match, especially when she got broken while serving for the win with a 5-3 lead.

"She's a very dangerous and tricky opponent, and she's capable of playing really well at the Slams and always raising her level against the top players," Sharapova said. "That was something I was very well aware of. I thought I stepped up to the challenge."

Meanwhile, crowd favorite Venus Williams suffered a heart-breaking loss to Sara Errani in their third-round showdown 6-0, 0-6, 7-6 (5) to end her bid to win a third U.S. Open title.

Second-seeded Simona Halep also suffered a stunning 7-6 (6), 6-2 loss to 121st-ranked Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, who advanced to the round-of-16 of a Grand Slam event for the first time since 1999.
