Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has just unveiled its new 3G-equipped Gear S smartwatch. It has a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED display that perfectly wraps around the wrist. The screen is customizable and the straps are changeable, which is a great idea, especially for those who like to change their watchstraps to go with the occasion.

Samsung's Gear S is branded as a phone within a watch because it supports both data transfer and voice calling, IB Times reports. Those who have been eagerly awaiting its release will not have to wait for long. It will be officially released in October. Its release will be done in phases, which will make the device available in global markets through the retail channels of Samsung, carriers and e-commerce websites starting in October. The Gear S smartwatch has a heart-rate sensor and a 300mAh Li-ion battery that will be good for two days, PC Advisor reports. It has turn-by-turn navigation that is powered by the pre-installed HERE Maps from Nokia. It also comes with a UV sensor. Another pre-installed app is the Financial Times' fastFT app, geared for the busy person who wants to be updated on what's going on in the business community. It is resistant to water and dust and it comes with an IP67 certification as well as S Voice.

Other key features of the Samsung Gear S smartwatch include Samsung's Tizen operating system, 4GB internal memory, 512MB of RAM and a dual-core 1.0 GHz processor. Moreover, it has a barometer, a compass, a gyroscope as well as a built-in accelerometer.

The Gear S, also called Solo, can work independently of a smartphone and also has GPS, USB 2.0, Bluetooth 4.1 as well 2G and 3G and wireless connectivity. Its 2G connectivity is over the 900/1800MHz or 850/1900MHz frequencies while its 3G connectivity is over the 850/1900MHz or 900/2100 MHz frequencies, according to Tech Hive.

Samsung's Solo is multi-functional. Nike+Running and Samsung's S Health platforms are integrated into its system which has weather and news apps as well. It has a gallery and can also be used as a music player. The Gear S follows a rectangular design, but Samsung is also working on one with a rounded design.
