Microsoft had several failures in the past when it created several tablet/laptop hybrids, but it seems they've learned their lesson and have created something that makes for a very good tablet -- the Surface Pro 3. It has bigger display, more RAM, more storage space and a better processor. It is a device that is aimed to replace your laptop and your tablet. Its main competitor in terms of specs is the iPad Air, according to Know Your Mobile.

In terms of design and display, Apple's iPad Air is made from a solid block of aluminum crafted by machine and measures 9.4" x 6.67" x 0.30" while weighing 469 grams. Its 9.7-inch display has a 2048 x 1536 pixel color IGZO screen at 264 pixels per inch with an aspect ratio of 4:3.

The Surface Pro 3 of Microsoft is made of magnesium alloy, weighing 800 grams and measuring 7.93" x 11.5" x 0.36". The body of the Surface Pro 3 houses a 12-inch 2160 x 1440 pixel ClearType HD display at 216 pixels per inch display with an aspect ratio of 3:2.

Surely there is no comparison here. Whereas the iPad Air is lighter and thinner, its screen is smaller than the Surface Pro 3 by more than two inches. The Surface 3 is a hybrid since it is positioned as a mobile device for people who need the portability of a tablet and the power of a laptop. It is thicker and heavier and comes with an optional cover for the keyboard. Similarly, the Surface Pro is more costly, easily breaking a thousand dollars with the type cover while the iPad Air stays well under at max specs.

When it comes to processor, RAM, storage and expansion, the iPad Air starts at 16 GB and goes up to 128 GB, and the Surface 3 starts at 64 GB and goes up to 512 GB and has a microSD card reader that can take cards up to 64 GB. Surface 3 also is a winner in the RAM and processor categories, Load the Game reports. Consider its Intel Core 1.6 GHz i3, i5, or i7 processor and 4 GB or 8 GB of RAM versus iPad Air's 1 GB of RAM and Apple's A7 chip.

While the iPad Air wins when it comes to connectivity and ports, the Surface 3's camera is far better. Still, the choice comes down to whether you just need a tablet or you are a power user that requires a more unwieldy laptop hybrid.
