Roger Federer avoided the upset axe in Day 7 of the 2014 U.S. Open tennis tournament on Sunday, but David Ferrer and Maria Sharapova failed to advance to the next round.

Federer, who is looking to end his Grand Slam title drought, recovered from a slow start to advance to the fourth round with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 win against Marcel Granollers of Spain on Sunday at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The second-seeded Swiss had a slow start as Granollers took a 5-2 lead before the match was suspended because of rain. When play resumed, Granollers managed to take the first set, but the complexion of the game changed from then on as Federer cruised to easy wins from sets two to four.

"I guess played better after that," Federer said on Sunday when asked if he benefited from the rain delay. "But then again, the first seven games all happened very quickly. I think the biggest difference was the wind. It was quite windy when we got out. When we came back, basically it was gone. It also felt quite different because the wind has that effect of air-conditioning a little bit for the players."

David Ferrer, who is tipped to face Federer in the semifinals, failed to advance after absorbing a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 upset loss against Gilles Simon of France.

On the women's side, Russian star Maria Sharapova was also booted out of the tournament, losing to Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in the fourth round of competition.

The fifth-seeded Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam champion, admitted after the match that she was too sloppy during the first and third sets of the match.

"I felt like in the end of the first set made a few sloppy errors to lose that first set in the end," Sharapova said. "Was happy with the way I turned things around and started playing a bit more aggressive. Got in the points with her. In the third set I stopped doing that."

With the win, Wozniacki arranged a quarter-final showdown against Sara Errani, who scored a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in their fourth-round encounter.
