Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2014 U.S. Open tennis tournament, while Serena Williams also moved on to the next round on the women's side on Monday.

Djokovic, who is a heavy favorite to win the title this year, cruised to an easy 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 over Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany at Louis Armstrong Stadium where the top-seeded superstar committed just 19 unforced errors.

The 27-year-old Serb, who is looking to win his eighth Grand Slam title, will face Murray in the quarterfinals after the Briton also booked a spot in the next round.

Murray, who won the title at Flushing Meadows in 2012, escaped with a hard-earned 7-5, 7-5, 6-4 win against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in their fourth round match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Murray needed two hours and 35 minutes to dispatch Tsonga, who almost took 3-0 lead in the final set, but the Briton saved three break points and took control from then on en route to the win.

Murray will face Djokovic for a spot in the semifinals, which will be a rematch of their 2012 U.S. Open final showdown, and the eighth-seeded former Wimbledon champion is looking forward to another tough showdown against the current world No. 1 tennis player.

"I would say we play a fairly similar style, and I think that's why a lot of the matches have been long games, long rallies, long points, because we do a lot of the same things well," Murray said via the tournament's official website.

Meanwhile, Williams moved one step closer to winning her 18th Grand Slam title after scoring a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set win against Kaia Kanepi of Estonia at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Williams, who is also eyeing her sixth U.S. Open title, will face Flavia Pennetta in the quarterfinals after the 11th-seeded Italian won against 29th-seeded Casey Dellacqua of Australia 7-5, 6-2 in the fourth round.

Victoria Azarenka of Bulgaria also won against Aleksandra Krunic 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to move on the final eight, while 17th-seeded Ekaterina Makarova of Russia eliminated seventh-seeded Eugenie Bouchard of Canada 7-6, 6-4.
