A man from upstate New York decided to end his own life in a rather gruesome and grisly way in New York City earlier this week.

Police say that 51-year-old Tomas Rivera of Port Jervis, a city located in New York's Orange County, beheaded himself in The Bronx (one of New York City's five boroughs) on Monday morning, according to reports from Reuters.

Rivera decapitated himself by tying one end of a chain around his neck and the other end to an electric pole. He then hit the gas and sped off in his 2005 white Honda Pilot around 9:30 a.m. on Monday. As a result, the chain yanked his head off of his body and his car didn't stop until it slammed into a parked vehicle on Longfellow Ave. near Randall Ave. in Hunts Point, police said, according to the New York Daily News.

The impact of the collision also caused Rivera's headless body to fly out of the car and land in the street, the New York Post reported.

He died at the scene and his head and body were found on the street. Police say they are investigating what appears to be a suicide.

Witnesses at the scene who found Rivera's headless body called 911 to report that what they believed was initially a death due to a tragic accident.

However, authorities discovered what had actually happened after investigating and reviewing surveillance footage, which confirmed the ghastly suicide.

There is no word on what motivated the middle-aged man to choose to end his life in such a graphic and gruesome manner.

Officials with the New York Police Department are still investigating to see if he left a suicide note.

As for now, no other details have been released.
