Chris Brown and Rihanna may be at different phases in their lives since they were last together, but Brown admits that the relationship will always be a part of his life.

The singer gave his first interview since being released from jail to Billboard, and he explained that he will always be tied to Rihanna.

But he does see one way that the media will stop tying the two together.

"When we're not relevant anymore, that might be the case," he said. "As long as you're doing something good, people will always bring up old stuff or negative stuff because they don't want you to surpass a certain level or elevate. But as long as you have your head on straight, it shouldn't matter what people want to say."

Brown also said he understands that he has a responsibility to the public because of the position he is in.

He also explained that he knows where he has gone wrong but that he is "only human." He added that no one is his biggest critic than he is and that he doesn't want these negative moments to end up defining his legacy.

While in jail, he didn't do any songwriting, but he did find a creative outlet through art. Though he described the activity as something to pass time.

He also talked about what being in jail was like for him.

"A guard wakes you up; you eat," he said. "You stay in your cell most of the time, basically 24 hours a day. Maybe on Mondays you go to the roof inside of a cage and have a phone call. It's isolation. You have time to focus on what matters, on what to do and what not to do."

He called it a humbling experience and said it made him realize the things that matter.
