The latest in the recent wave of taxi apps like Uber, Lyft and Gett comes SheTaxis, which has its own unique spin. This taxi service will have only female drivers and only accepts female passengers.

The approaching launch in New York City, Long Island and Westchester County will be Sept. 16.

SheTaxis, or SheRide as it will be called in New York because of limitations on businesses who can include the word taxi, was founded by Stella Mateo. Mateo is a mother and wife to the founder of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers.

Similar to Uber and Lyft, Mateo's customers can simply order a car using a smartphone app. However, the difference with SheTaxis is that the app asks whether there is a woman passenger in the group. If there isn't, the app recommends other non-gender focused taxi services.

This focus on female-only taxis may seem new in the United States, but female-specific transportation internationally is much more common. In New Zealand, Cabs for Women operates in an identical way to SheTaxis with the company also only hiring female drivers. India has a similar taxi service in addition to women-only train cars.

These type of cabs are marketed to women that are concerned about sexual harassment, especially from male drivers. Recently, reports of other smartphone taxi app customers being sexually harassed are on the rise. Olivia Nuzzi wrote an article for the Daily Beast that described multiple male Uber drivers sexually harassing her. An LA Weekly article described another Uber driver that "touched [a woman passenger's] face, asked her to go to the beach and kept an interior light on, possibly to look at her."

New York City taxis are male-dominated with The New York Times reporting that only 5 percent of the city's cabs are driven by women. Mateo said that she hopes SheTaxis will help more women to find work as taxi drivers.
