The final installment of Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" trilogy is coming soon to theaters worldwide. "The Battle of the Five Armies" will be officially released on Dec. 12 in the United Kingdom and on Dec. 17 in the United States, as previously reported.

Fans eager to see a glimpse of "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" can view the official trailer on the Facebook page for the film. From the preview, it can be gleaned that the film will be focused on the journey of Thorin Oakenshield and his fellow dwarves as they battle the fierce dragon Smaug in order to take their land back.

The title of the film is taken from the climactic and epic battle between the great Eagles, the Dwarves of the Lonely Mountain, the Elves of Mirkwood, the Men of Long Lake and the Goblins of Moria.

Having taken the land from Smaug, the armies will have to defeat the fearsome dragon as it unleashed its wrath on Laketown.

Many of the previous cast members from "An Unexpected Journey" and "The Desolation of Smaug" will be reprising their roles. Martin Freeman returns as Bilbo Baggins and Sir Ian McKellen will be portraying Gandalf the Grey. The leader of the dwarves, Thorin Oakenshield, will still be played by Richard Armitage. Orlando Bloom will be back as Legolas Greenleaf the Elf and there will be unexpected things that happen in his story, including his relationship with Thranduil, his father.

Benedict Cumberbatch will be the voice of Smaug and Sauron, the Necromancer. Christopher Lee will reprise his role as Saruman. Other characters that will make an appearance include Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Evangeline Lilly (Tauriel), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Hugo Weaving (Elrond) and Sylvester McCoy as Radagast the Brown.

The Battle of the Five Armies will bring to an end the destruction unleashed by Smaug during the epic battle as Thorin Oakenshield will make his final stand. There is some speculation that Saruman might even help his friend, Gandalf.
