It looks like Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have lived up to their hype, as Apple announced Monday that the two new iPhones hit a new record for first-day pre-orders. Bad news? Some customers will have to wait thanks to the large volume.

Apple revealed that over four million units of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were sold during the first 24 hours when pre-orders began Sept. 12. In comparison, Apple took in over two million pre-orders for the iPhone 5 during the first day two years ago, and first weekend sales exceeded 5 million. The iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c also broke records last year when consumers picked up 9 million units during the first weekend of sales.

Those who weren't able to pre-order one online soon after the gates opened, however, will find themselves in a waiting list months long. Apple's online store promises the iPhone 6 by the end of September and the iPhone 6 Plus sometime in October. Carriers have longer wait times with most saying the estimated ship date will be at the end of October/November.

"iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are better in every way, and we are thrilled customers love them as much as we do," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement Monday. "Pre-orders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record for Apple, and we can't wait to get our best iPhones yet into the hands of customers starting this Friday."

Apple's new iPhones have gathered more attention than usual thanks to the leap in size. The iPhone 6 features a 4.7-inch display while the iPhone 6 Plus offers a 5.5-inch screen for those looking for a larger option. This year's iPhones mark the first time that Apple has gone past a 4-inch screen on an iPhone. The iPhone 5, 5s, and 5c all sported 4-inch displays and previous models were at 3.5 inches. The new iPhones will give Apple a footing in the larger-sized smartphone market, where Android has been dominating unchallenged for quite some time now.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be available in stores for purchase Friday, Sept. 19 through Apple retail stores, all major wireless carrier outlets, and select dealers like Walmart, Best Buy and Target. Both models feature the new A8 chip, an improved camera, and more rounded bodies.

Pricing for the smaller iPhone 6 by internal storage starts at $199 for 16GB, $299 for 64GB, and $399 for the 128GB. The iPhone 6 Plus, meanwhile, costs $299 for 16Gb, $399 for 64GB, and $499 for 128GB. All prices are contingent on a two-year contract.
