Though it's been widely reported that Gael Garcia Bernal and Dolores Fonzi are separating, the actor explained that the two were never actually married.

"We actually didn't even get married. We had kids," he said. "Well, I mean, you're more than married, right? In a way, having kids?"

He continued to explain that what the government or church said is not as important as the person you're with and the understanding you have.

Bernal adds that it isn't this way with everyone, but it was for him and Fonzi.

"The institution of family is important, definitely," he said. "And I enjoy it a lot. More than I thought I would."

Bernal is also not sure he believes in monogamy, something he described as coming from a "medieval time" that might not have a place in today's society.

In the interview, he also touched on his own childhood, where he explained that his mother and father had him when they were very young. They also separated when he was young.

He grew up in the theater, as his parents were stage actors, and he likened himself to "The Phantom of the Opera."

"We knew exactly what time the scene was where an actress that we fancied would come onstage," he said. "This was a very experimental theater -- and sometimes those scenes involved being nude. We were completely transfixed."

He said his mother was very independent when he was growing up, and though there were parts of her life where he was involved, there were parts that he wasn't. Still, she offered him support.

It was Patricia Bernal who ultimately confirmed that her son was separating Dolores Fonzi.

"Decisions are made and that's how they are," she said. "Here the most important thing are his children, whom he has to take care of and help them move forward."
