Tesla Motors joins Apple and Alibaba in the latest round of technology news. Alongside the release of the iPhone 6 and the Chinese e-commerce company's initial public offering, the America electric car maker is announcing its own upgrade of the Model S electric car.

While Tesla has been known for its technological advancements, the electric car manufacturer is integrating the software of its cars with their owners' mobile connectivity over the Internet while adding a number of new features, according to USA Today.

For one, the Model S can remember steep potholes and steep driveways and will automatically adjust to avoid these road imperfections. This feature recalls locations where the driver had previously adjusted their vehicles to make the ride more comfortable and automatically raises the vehicle when the driver visits the same spot. This feature is only available on the Model S cars that come with air suspension.

Another feature that would be useful for the everyday commute is the user-shared data of traffic-based navigation that takes into account the information that comes from other Tesla vehicles on the road. Also, the vehicle can be synchronized with the driver's smartphone for remote starting, power management and even naming the car. Once the driver has registered the nickname over the Tesla mobile app, it will then appear on the 17-inch touch-screen display in the vehicle that also shows other information on the "About Your Tesla" module.

While electric vehicles and wirelessly upgrading the software inside a car does not make Tesla unique, the location-based air suspension is a new and interesting feature. Perhaps more importantly, Tesla could potentially represent a shift for the auto industry at large, allowing car manufacturers to roll out new improvements and features for the customization and improvement of the driving experience and not just vehicle safety.
