On Sept. 18, Lionsgate announced that "The Smosh Movie" is in the works and that they have the global distribution rights to it. The movie will star Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox. According to Variety, the producers describe the movie as something like "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure," but the concept will be on a higher scale.

The director is Alex Winter, and Eric Falconer is the scriptwriter. The plot will revolve around Anthony's embarrassing video that showed up online before his high school's five-year reunion. The Smosh duo then has to race against time to pull down the video before Anthony's chances of connecting once again with his crush, Anna, are blown away.

Other cast members include YouTube stars Dominic "D-Trix" Sandoval, Mark Fischback (Markiplier), Shane Dawson, Harley Morenstein, Grace Helbig and Jenna Marbles. Also in the cast are Michael Ian Black, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Brittany Ross and Jillian Nelson.

If you are not familiar with what Smosh is all about, it is a highly popular comedy duo on YouTube that has over 3.5 million views and 18 million subscribers as of September 2014. It all started when Anthony Padilla and his best friend Ian Hecox posted videos on YouTube in 2005 and became one of the video-sharing site's most popular channels. They have already expanded and have included animation, comedy skits in Spanish and even have video gaming content.

The movie is financed jointly by the digital media company Defy Media and AwesomenessTV of DreamWorks Animation, which is headed by Brian Robbins. Lionsgate has an equity interest in the latter company. They are banking on the online celebrity status of Padilla and Hecox to get audiences to go see the film, The Wrap reports.

The release date has not yet been set and the distribution plan is not concrete. However, shooting for the movie is already complete, and the film is in post-production stage right now.
