"American Horror Story" creator Ryan Murphy and Season 4 stars Sarah Paulson and John Caroll Lynch are promising a unique upcoming season with some of the most memorable characters ever.

During this season, titled "Freak Show," Lynch will play the villain, Twisty the Clown.

In an interview with Buzzfeed, Murphy said he and the writers wanted to make Twisty "the most terrifying clown of all time."

"I'm worried about people being too afraid of our clown," Murphy said. "It's heart-stopping what he does. ... The clown's intro in the first episode is ... even I was terrified of it. It's brutal. ... I think he's pretty extraordinary because, when you see why he's a clown and why he's wearing the mask ... just you wait."

Lynch's 6-foot-3 height makes the character extra scary, but the actor said there are more frightening things about Twisty than his appearance.

"His actions are horrific, but his motives are really strangely, oddly pure. And that's what is most human and most disturbing about it," Lynch said. "As an actor, I've given up judgment of evil, as long as it's human evil -- we have to see ourselves for what we really are, and we're capable of horrific things. I don't intend to advocate for the horrific characters, but I hope they reflect humanity at its most vicious because we need to really look at ourselves and see it."

Lynch also discussed the emotions he wishes to evoke out of those who watch "Freak Show."

"I hope they see a reflection of their own lives," he said. "Even if it means they need to look at what they're actually doing, not what they think they're doing."

Meanwhile, Paulson recently shared details about her character, conjoined twins Bette and Dot. She told Entertainment Weekly that freak show manager Elsa (played by Jessica Lange) finds them while they're facing consequences for some "dark deeds."

"One has more darkness in her but not darkness of evil --- darkness of depression, of knowing what's out in the world," Paulson said. "The other one is more of an innocent. It's innocent and more cynical."

As of now, Paulson doesn't know of Bette and Dot's relationship with Twisty, although she suspects the clown is "watching" them. Still, Paulson said the two-headed body is the craziest character she's ever portrayed.

"There is something that happens in the very first episode that's crazy, that sets the scene for the rest of the season for them," she said.

Paulson also compared "Freak Show" to Season 2, "Asylum."

"I think from a creative standpoint it's got that feeling of 'Asylum,' in that it's really about something: this idea of being a forgotten soul in the world that's just been cast aside," she said. "The stuff that's happening this year with the sets and the costumes it is so beyond. And Ryan's going very different with the style of the show in terms of the way it's being shot."

"American Horror Story: Freak Show" premieres on FX on Oct. 8 at 10 p.m.
