Minecraft is well known as a block-breaking, sandbox game where almost anything is possible. Gamers are free to build just about whatever they can dream up.

But with such freedom to build, Minecraft users are also able to recreate existing buildings and structures in the virtual world, which is exactly what's being planned for the British Museum in London, according to a report from BBC.

The project is called Museum of the Future and is an effort to increase the museum's appeal. The British Museum will be built virtually from the ground up and will include all of the museum's exhibits.

A British Museum spokeswoman said the project was in "an early planning state" and that virtual construction on the museum has not started, adding that the museum was planning to reach out to the public for help on the build.

The London museum would not be the first institutional building that has been recreated in Minecraft. Both the Ordnance Survey, Britain's mapping agency, and the Danish government have had buildings recreated in the game.

Organizations see Minecraft as a way to reach young people and make them aware of their work.

A British Museum employee has posted details about the Museum of the Future project on Reddit, and reports say the project has gotten a warm response from the Minecraft community.

The first step in Minecraft museum construction will be building the Great Court and facade of the building, after which the rest of the museum can be completed.

British Museum officials hope the initial stage of construction will be done by Oct. 16, in time for a debate called "Changing public dialogues with museum collections in the digital age."

Gaming researcher Ed Barton said that by involving the Minecraft community, the British Museum would be perceived by the younger generation as something fun.

"It's the digital equivalent of building the British Museum in Lego," he said. "You have to build it brick by brick. What a cool project it would be to be asked to build the Elgin Marbles in Minecraft."

At the moment, Minecraft is expected to go through a bit of a transition period, after reports surfaced last week that Microsoft is in the process of a $2.5 billion takeover of Minecraft developer Mojang, according to The Wall Street Journal.
