Android L is the latest software update from Google's Android operating system. It is expected to go head-to-head with Apple's latest release of their operating system iOS 8.

Release Date: It is out and ready to be used. It debuted at the end of August and beat out Apple's mid-September iOS 8 update. Depending on your device, you probably already have Android L on your phone or tablet already.

Updates: Android 5.0 L updates are coming for the Nexus 4, Nexus 5 Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 and according to recent leaks it is coming soon. International Business Times is reporting a date of Oct. 16 for an update to this software. The name is still yet to be determined, however. Anything is better than the name Android KitKat though.

Features: Get ready for colorful actions, animations, layering and basically a great visual experience. That is what Google wants to do with this new update. If you drag something from one side of the screen to the other, you will see its shadows. It will be a rather realistic movement experience.

Battery life is going to improve on all devices getting the new update. It could improve by 30-40 percent in your favor, so that is a great sign.

The lock screen appears to be better than the old one. You will be able to interact with your alerts and notifications. If you got a new text message, you will see it and you will be able to swipe to dismiss it or tap to read it, instead of having to unlock your phone.

The alerts and notifications will even be sorted on a user-specific basis. This means that if you love USA Today breaking news alerts, those will go to the top of your lock screen.
