Chrysler Group is recalling an estimated 230,760 sport utility vehicles worldwide to install a new relay circuit that will improve fuel pump performance and prevent the affected vehicles from stalling or simply not starting.

The automaker in a news announcement said it was unaware of any accidents or injuries linked to the issue.

The fuel pump relay is located inside an integrated power module that helps manage other vehicle functions that apparently were not affected by the problem, said Chrysler, which is a unit of Fiat.

The automaker, based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, said an internal product review revealed some fuel pump relays in 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango models were prone to deformation.

Chrysler confirmed the recall covers an estimated 188,723 SUVs sold in the United States, 15,898 in Canada, 7,126 in Mexico and 19,013 outside the North American market.

Chrysler Group said it will will advise affected customers when they may schedule service, which will be performed at no cost.

The company said owners with questions may call Chrysler Group's customer information number: 1-800-853-1403.

The recall comes on the heels of Chrysler Group's best reported August sales numbers since 2002.

Overall company sales in the U.S. sales reached 198,379 units, a 20 percent increase over the 165,552 units purchased in August 2013.

Meanwhile, according to a news release, the Chrysler, Jeep and Ram Truck brands each posted year-over-year sales gains in August -- with the Jeep brand's 49 percent increase the largest sales gain of any Chrysler Group brand during August and its best ever sales in the month of August. Chrysler Group extended its streak of year-over-year sales gains to 53-consecutive months.

"Chrysler Group sales soared 20 percent last month resulting in our strongest August sales in 12 years," said Reid Bigland, head of U.S. sales. "Our Jeep brand continued its torrid sales pace recording its best August sales ever and our Ram Truck brand contributed with a massive 39 percent sales increase, both helping Chrysler Group achieve its 53rd-consecutive month of year-over-year sales growth."
