School may have started in September for most people but classes have yet to begin for witches, at least until Oct. 9th. The FX horror anthology "American Horror Story" is back with its third season titled "American Horror Story: Coven."

The plot of this season takes place in New Orleans 300 years after the Salem witch trials. Zoe, played by returning American Horror Story star Taissa Farmiga, is horrified to discover she possesses a genetic connection tracing back to the Salem era. Zoe is taken to join an Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies. The school's purpose is to provide a safe place for the remaining descendants that contain this unique bloodline. The ladies are protected and mentored since the few that remain are almost extinct and in danger.

This season is expected to see witches, witch-hunts, slavery, incest, and witchcraft versus voodoo. The season will be set in modern time with flashbacks to the 1830s.

Some American Horror Story veteran cast members will return; Jessica Lange, Evean Peters and Sarah Paulson. The Oscar winning actress Kathy Bates is casted as a co-star appearing to be a friend but then becoming an enemy. Series executive producer and co-creator Ryan Murphy states that Bates's past "Misery" character has nothing on her character in "American Horror Story: Coven," and her character is also based on true events. Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe is also joining the cast in an unknown role.

Oscar nominee Angela Bassett and two time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone have joined the cast as well. Basset will be playing a voodoo priestess based on Marie Laveau, famously known in New Orleans for her voodoo practice. LuPone's character will be a religious extremist close to the mother character in the movie "Carrie."

The previous plots and story lines in "American Horror Story" have been so outrageous but well connected that this season will not disappoint, and how could it will such a prestige cast?

The "American Horror Story: Coven" season premiere is set for Oct. 9th at 10pm on FX.
