It has been almost two decades since the "Independence Day" movie juggernaut hit theaters. Now that two sequels are on its way, could Jeff Goldblum, Will Smith and Bill Pullman be on board the alien mothership?

"Independence Day" came to movie theaters in 1996. There have been reports from Goldblum early this month and last year and from the "Independence Day" director Roland Emmerich about who is involved in the movie and what the sequel is about.

Here is what we know about this alien invasion movie so far:

Pullman, who played the President of the U.S., and Goldblum, who played the genius scientist, will be involved.

Last year, while Emmerich was promoting his movie "White House Down," he confirmed that Smith will not return in the two sequels, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Speaking to Time earlier this month, Goldblum said he had a meeting with Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the films' producer, and that the two were working on a script.

"They have a part for me in what they hope will be a plan to make another one pretty soon," Goldblum said according to E! Online. "They're still talking about it, and I've heard recent rumblings here and there about it, and 'Oh, there's a scripting coming in' -- maybe last weekend there was a script handed in, so it's brewing."

The sequels will be titled "ID Forever Part I" and "ID Forever Part II." They take place 20 years after the original movie. After the first wave of aliens, a distress call was sent to bring more alien reinforcements to ravage the Earth, Entertainment Weekly reported.

According to Emmerich, humanity is aware that the aliens will return.

"And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that's 20 or 25 years," he said.

Emmerich also said he has been working with the art department to see how the new "ID Forever" world will look. Earth is now a changed world, and humans are using alien technology.

"It's like a parallel history," he said.

Devlin was not fully aware of the love still around for "Independence Day." He said that the dynamics between the characters is what drew people to the film and made it compelling, the Franchise Herald reported.

"The thing that really hit me about the movie is how much love there is in it: between the characters; that the filmmakers had making it; that the cast had for each other," Devlin said. "As we're approaching a sequel we're focusing on that aspect of it. Because I think that was really the key as to why it worked for everyone. It was lovable."

"ID Forever Part I" and "ID Forever Part II" are also expected to tell the story from the point of view of the children of Smith's and Pullman's characters, and will therefore have a younger perspective.

According to Entertainment Weekly, "ID Forever Part 1" hits theaters July 1, 2016.
