Apple's new iOS7 operating system may have just been released, but some are calling for iPhone users to hop on board as soon as possible to secure their phone's safety.

The New York Police Department has sent cops to Apple stores, Subway Stations, and Best Buy Outlets with orders to hand out fliers to people encouraging them to install the iOS7 update because of advanced security features that were not available on the previous operating system.

"Attention Apple Users!!!!! By downloading the new operating system, should your device get lost or stolen, it cannot be reprogrammed without an Apple ID or password," the flier says, according to the New York Post.

The NYPD is referring to a new Activation Lock that prevents people from reprogramming a stolen phone without an Apple ID or password. Another key point they made is the difference iPhones have with other phones in terms of a SIM card.

"If you have a phone where you can take out the SIM card and replace it, it has value," one law-enforcement source said to the NY Post. "If you can't do that, it's a useless piece of plastic, so there's no value when it's stolen."

Despite this, some critics have wondered whether the fliers are just helping with the advertising of Apple products, whether it is intentional or not.

"Still, to have the police lend a helping hand so that Apple can announce a record number of iOS 7 downloads in a terribly short time, adds an aura to proceedings," CNET's Chris Matyszczyk said.

It has been a busy month for Apple since the company has not only released the iOS7 update but also the iPhone 5c and 5s.
