There's great news for fans of "X-Men: Apocalypse" comics. Christian Today reports that Tom Hardy has been selected to play the role of Apocalypse, the Egyptian mutant known as 'The First One' in the Marvel Universe, in the upcoming "X-Men: Apocalypse" movie set for a 2016 release.

While some fans agree there's no one more fitting for the part of Apocalypse, the Inquisitr News reports that many fans want Dwayne Johnson, a.k.a. The Rock, to play the role of Apocalypse.

Hardy has the preference of both Marvel and DC since he is apparently being linked to superhero movies soon to be in theatres, according to Christian Today. In addition to X-Men Apocalypse, Hardy is rumored to be playing "Doctor Strange" of Marvel and DC's "Suicide Squad."

Enstarz reports that Anna Kendrick could take over the role of Jean Grey from Jennifer Lawrence though the film's producers have been looking for a younger actress to play the part. Kendrick has experience playing neurotic characters, which is exactly what the X-Men series needs, says Enstarz.

Expect to see Quicksilver, the breakout star of "X-Men: Days of Future Past" in this sequel, according to Spinoff Online. Franchise veteran Brian Smrz, who served as second-unit director on many X-Men films, confirmed to Newsarama that fans will see more of Evan Peters' speedster in the new installment.

Based on "X-Men Apocalypse" news, the cast of characters will be time travelling when they encounter Apocalypse who, proclaiming himself god, uses his powers to control people, which quickly makes him enemy No. 1 for the team. Characters Jean Grey and Cyclops in particular will have a rivalry with the Egyptian mutant.

Spinoff Online claims "X-Men: Apocalypse" will have a theater release date of May 27, 2016.
