The SEC is flexing their muscles, at least for now. They own the top three positions in the latest college football poll.

Here is the top six:

  1. Mississippi State (SEC) (7-0)
  2. Florida State (ACC) (7-0)
  3. Auburn (SEC) (6-1)
  4. Ole Miss (SEC) (7-1)
  5. Oregon (PAC 12) (7-1)
  6. Alabama (SEC) (7-1)

The SEC owns spots 1, 2 and 4. This means that if the playoffs were to start today, that three SEC teams would make it and then Florida State would be the final team. The playoffs for college football commence in January with a four-team playoff deciding this year's National Champion.

A 12-person team decided the rankings of these teams who will ultimately take part in the playoffs.

This is the first time the NCAA has used a playoff system like this for football. In college basketball there is a 68-team playoff that decides the National Champion each year.

Still some think the way that the rankings are chosen are controversial.

"We don't analyze it by conference," Arkansas athletic director and committee chairman Jeff Long told ESPN. "We look at those teams and evaluate the teams they played and the success they had, or the failures they had."

Oregon's fifth ranking brings a PAC 12 team into the mix, but for now it really looks like the selection committee wants SEC teams in the playoffs. The final rankings will be released Dec. 7.

Long wanted to stress that there is still plenty of football left to be played before these rankings become final.

"Everyone on the selection committee recognized that our rankings will change over the next six weeks," Long said. "I think that's important for us to emphasize. We expect our rankings to change over the next six weeks. One week's rankings won't influence the next week's rankings."
