For the third time in the last five seasons, the San Francisco Giants are champions of the Major League Baseball world.

The 2014 World Series was an exciting one, with the Giants victorious over the Kansas City Royals in a seven-game thriller. Madison Bumgarner was unbelievable, allowing just one run in 21 innings during the World Series.

The big question in the sports world now is: Are the Giants a dynasty?

Why the Giants are a Dynasty

What more could you ask for?

The Giants have won three World Series titles in the last five seasons, all against different teams. The Giants have won all three championships with the same manager, Bruce Bochy. In 2010, the Giants defeated the Texas Rangers in five games, and in 2012 the Giants swept the Detroit Tigers in four games. Players such as Buster Posey, Hunter Pence, Bumgarner and Pablo Sandoval have made this possible.

This Giants team has not only won two World Series' as division winners but one as a wild card team. In their most recent title run, the Giants had to travel to Pittsburgh in the National League Wild Card Game. A game which they won 8-0 against the Pirates. All three times in which this Giants squad has made the postseason in the last five years, they won the World Series. Oddly enough, the Giants are most often the underdogs, a title they seem to thrive upon.

In the Giants last three postseason appearances, they are a perfect 10-0 in their 10 playoff series'.

Throughout sports history, we've witnessed sports dynasties like the '50s New York Yankees, '60s Boston Celtics and '70s Pittsburgh Steelers. Even the '80s Los Angeles Lakers and '90s Dallas Cowboys will always be remembered for what they accomplished. With the Giants winning three titles in five years in a league that has more teams and balance than ever before, they are surely a dynasty to be remembered.

Why the Giants are Not a Dynasty

The Giants accomplished a great feat by winning three titles in five years but not an unimaginable one.

The St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series three times in five years from 1942-1946. Are they considered a dynasty? This team is exciting to watch, but part of the reason is because they are always the underdog.

Despite winning three World Series championships, the Giants did miss the postseason entirely in 2011 and 2013. It's hard to imagine a team is a dynasty after failing to make the playoffs just last season. Last season, the Giants had a 76-86 record and didn't even compete for a playoff spot.

Most of the all-time great franchise who win multiple championships have something in common; they win consecutive championships. Defending the crown is extremely important when being considered a dynasty. Not a single time did the Giants even put up a fighting effort after winning one of their championships. Even this very season, the Giants won just 88 regular season games, six fewer than the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.

In some ways, the Giants are their own worst enemy. They don't defend their title well at all, and they don't win a lot of regular season games. But, in the end, the only thing that matters is winning the final game of the season.
