Midway through the 2014-15 NFL season, division races are getting tight.

Great teams are separating themselves from the good teams and the good teams are separating themselves from the bad ones.

The NFC East has certainly done just that. The Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys have emerged as heavy favorites to win this division, while the Washington Redskins and New York Giants are struggling to win games. Both the Giants and Redskins have just three wins this entire season, and should be watching the playoffs from home in January.

The Cowboys have an impressive 6-3 record, while the Eagles lead the division at 6-2.

At this point in the season, it's safe to say that the Eagles and Cowboys will be battling it out for the NFC East title.

The Eagles are the defending NFC East champions, having beat the Cowboys on the final game of the season last year to win the NFC East at 10-6. The only two losses this season for the Eagles came against NFC West opponents, the San Francisco 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals. In their last game, the Eagles defeated the Houston Texans, 31-21.

LeSean McCoy, who led the NFL in rushing yards last season, got off to a rough start, but he appears to have found his way lately. McCoy is averaging 107.5 rushing yards per game in his last four games. Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin has stepped up big time with DeSean Jackson no longer with the team. Maclin has a team-leading 790 yards and eight touchdowns this season for the Eagles.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, quarterback Nick Foles is expected to miss the next two months because of a broken collarbone. Former No. 5 overall draft pick Mark Sanchez will be starting in place of Foles.

The Cowboys have followed a very similar path as the Eagles.

The Cowboys have lost just three games this season, two of which came to the 49ers and Cardinals, just like the Eagles. The Cowboys also have health problems when it comes to the quarterback position. Tony Romo, who had back surgery during the offseason, missed his last game against the Redskins because of back issues. The Cowboys lost to the Cardinals in Week 9 (28-17) with Brandon Weeden starting over Romo. Weeden played poor against the Cardinals with two interceptions and a 55 passer rating.

The big surprise in Big D has been the defense. Despite losing Sean Lee, DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher, the Cowboys defense is ranked 13th overall in the NFL. Last season, the Cowboys ranked 32nd overall in team defense, one of the worst we've ever seen in league history.

Dez Bryant and Jason Witten continue to make great catches and spread the field, but the emergence of DeMarco Murray has been the No. 1 story in the NFL this season. Murray leads the NFL in rushing yards with 1,133 and it's a big contract year for him. Last week, against the Cardinals, was the first time this whole season that Murray failed to eclipse the 100-yard mark.

So who has the edge going forward, the Cowboys or the Eagles?

The Eagles do have one fewer loss than the Cowboys, but the injury to Foles won't help. Sanchez has done some good things in this league, like win four playoff games and throw nine touchdowns to just three interceptions in his playoff career. Maybe Sanchez can make the playoffs for the third time in his career. Chip Kelly has inserted himself as one of the best coaches in the NFC. His fast-paced offense has led to a lot of wins over the last two seasons.

On the other hand, the Cowboys do have a few advantages over the Eagles. With an easy game this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Cowboys may have the schedule on their side. The Eagles still have to play the Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks. The only tough game remaining for the Cowboys (other than the Eagles) is against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 16.

The Cowboys and Eagles will play each other in Week 13 on Nov. 27 on Thanksgiving Day at AT&T Stadium. The Cowboys and Eagles play each other again in Week 15 on Dec. 15 at Lincoln Financial Field. There's no doubt that those games will be the deciding factor to who will win the NFC East this season.
