Jared Leto is rumored to play the Joker in the upcoming film "Suicide Squad," the new film by David Ayer.

After Ryan Gosling rejected the role, Warner Bros. looked to Leto, who is known for his diversity and commitment to roles.

The choice is very interesting and one that could definitely work. Leto has taken on a wide range of roles and has literally transformed into each character that he plays. For example, in 2013, he played Rayon in "Dallas Buyer Club" for which he won an Oscar. Not only did he lose a lot of weight but also had to use women's clothes.

In "Chapter 27," a movie about the infamous murder of John Lennon, he plays the assassin Mark David Chapman, a role for which he gained tremendous amounts of weight. Leto spoke of the difficulties of losing the weight afterwards and noted that he would never do it again.

There is no doubt that Leto would be a great Joker, but it seems too soon for another actor to take on Batman's arch nemesis. In 2008, Heath Ledger took on the character and won an Oscar for his portrayal in "The Dark Knight Rises." The actor's performance became iconic and unforgettable but also reportedly caused him to commit suicide. Jack Nicholson, who played the role in 1989 in "Batman," is also famous for the role and also noted that the role took a toll on him.

According to rumors, Gosling rejected the role because the actor had to commit to many films, which he was not willing to do. This could cause Leto not to take the offer. The actor has never repeated a character and has never been in a big blockbuster. Additionally, he took a six-year break from acting and, as of late, has only signed on to make Independent films with small budgets. He has also not announced his follow-up to his Oscar-winning performance which only shows that he is concentrating at the moment on his band, "30 Seconds to Mars."

At the moment, the film will star Margot Robbie from "The Wolf of Wall Street" as Harley Quinn, while Jai Courtney from "Divergent" will take on the role of Deadshot. Jesse Eisenberg is also slated to reprise his role as Lex Luthor after "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." Tom Hardy and Will Smith have also been rumored for the film, which is slated to be directed by Ayer, who recently directed the critically acclaimed "Fury" and "End of Watch."

"Suicide Squad" is slated to be released in 2016 and tells the story of the U.S. Government, which forms a team of supervillains to pull off extremely difficult missions in return for shorter prison sentences.

The movie is part of Warner Bros.' DC Comics series. Like Disney, the company will unite the most prominent DC comic heroes. The first film in the series will be "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and will be followed by six untitled films.
