Gennady Golovkin is eyeing a title unification bout against Miguel Cotto, but his trainer, Abel Sanchez, believes that the Puerto Rican is not interested in facing the unbeaten middleweight champion.

Sanchez said that he is not expecting a fight between Golovkin and Cotto anytime soon as reports indicated that Cotto's camp is in talks with Golden Boy Promotions about the highly anticipated bout against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

Golovkin's trainer said that the Cotto-Canelo showdown will be big, but he pointed out that Cotto, the reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion should face Golovkin.

And if Cotto continues to express no interest in facing Golovkin, who is the reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Organization (IBO) middleweight champion, Sanchez said that the Caguas, Puerto Rico native should just relinquish his title.

"I think Canelo versus Cotto is a good fight," Sanchez said via Fightsaga. "But if you call yourself the lineal Middleweight Champion, you're expected to defend that title against the best fighters in the division. If not, then you should relinquish that distinction, especially if you want to compete as a Junior Middleweight."

If the title unification bout against Cotto won't happen soon, Sanchez revealed that they will likely move up to the super middleweight division where they could face big-name fighters like Carl Froch, James DeGale, Andre Ward and former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

"We would even be willing to compete at 168 pounds to fight Chavez Jr., Carl Froch, even De Gale I think those match-ups would be big events and entertaining fights," Sanchez said. "If Andre Ward ever decides to resolve his legal issues, we would have no problem entertaining the idea of facing him also."

Golovkin has been dominating opponents over the past several years. The 32-year-old Kazakh recently scored a second-round knockout win against Marco Antonio Rubio to improve his record to 31-0 with 28 stoppage victories.

Sanchez recently said in an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radio that Golovkin will continue to dominate, saying that there is no fighter at the junior middleweight and middleweight division who could withstand Golovkin's punching power.

"I said a long time ago that there was nobody at 154 or 160 that could go twelve rounds with him and I stand by that now," Sanchez said. "There is nobody at 160 that will go twelve rounds with him. We may have the bigger challenges at 168 in the future."
