The story of Aurelio Casillas becoming one of the biggest drug traffickers in Mexico has resonated with Latino audiences, and Carmen Villalobos is riding the wave.

At the 2014 International Emmy Awards, Villalobos came prepared to talk about the Telemundo hit "El Señor De Los Cielos," which won the award for Best Non-English Language U.S. Program.

Unlike many telenovelas, this show recently aired its second season finale. In the United States, telenovelas usually run Monday through Friday for anywhere between 80 to more than 100 episodes. Then, the show is over and only comes back through reruns.

However, Season 2 of "El Señor De Los Cielos" premiered on May 26 and was as successful as the first season, Villalobos said. The finale had almost 3.2 million viewers

According to Villalobos, this is because Telemundo has been able to set itself apart.

"The truth is that Telemundo is always innovating, and the stories are different," she told Latin Post on the red carpet in Spanish. "I think that's what people like about it, and why they are preferring us."

Villalobos, who went from being a recurring character in Season 1 to a main character in Season 2, further explained that the stories felt fresh and that it might explain why it's not just women who are watching these shows.

And taking these chances has paid off for Telemundo.

"It's historic for Telemundo because it's the first time that we receive a nomination," Villalobos said before winning the award. "So whether we get the award or not, it's already wow. It's marvelous to be at this gala."

Though she and the rest of the "El Señor De Los Cielos" cast will be celebrating their time at the International Emmys, they have something else to look forward to: Season 3. The season will air in January, and if the first two seasons are any indication, Season 3 will also be successful.

Villalobos is very aware of how well received the show is because of Twitter. Through hashtags like #ElSenordeLosCielos2 and #ElSenordeLosCielos, people live tweet the show. The hashtags were also inundated with messages congratulating the team for its Emmy win.

The actress said she recognizes how passionate the show's following is, so she does her best to maintain a relationship with them.

"And I like to maintain contact with the fans," Villalobos explained. "Truly, I try to be in contact with them on a day-to-day basis. They are the ones who are there paying attention to your careers and your projects. So it's very important to have a relationship with your fans, your supporters."
