The midseason finale of "Scandal" has left many mysteries for viewers waiting to know where in the world is Olivia Pope, among other cliffhangers. Creator Shonda Rhimes' hit ABC series won't resume airing until next year, but the last episode left plenty for fans to wonder about during the break.

Papa Pope, played by Joe Morton, put out a hit on his own daughter and her two loves, ex-B613 agent Jake Ballard (Scott Foley) and the president of the United States, Fitzgerald "Fitz" Grant, played by Tony Goldwyn. However, in a twisted chess game, Olivia instead retaliates by trying to kill her old man. However, in her attempt, the gun Kerry Washington's Olivia Pope was using wasn't loaded and therefore couldn't go through with her mission.

Meanwhile, President Fitz decided, against the counsel of his vice president Andrew Nichols, played by Jon Tenney, to go to war with the fictitious West Angola.

However, these surprises were nothing compared to when Olivia completely and suspiciously disappeared from her apartment while Jake was just in the other room.

At the end of the midseason finale, audiences are left hanging about almost every major character on the show.

According to Goldwyn, then the show returns, Fitz will be faced with more stress than he can handle.

"It will potentially destroy Fitz again," Goldwyn said in a TVGuide interview. "How much more can a man take? This will really test him. The stakes are unbelievably high and I can say that it will be scary."

Although fans don't anticipate Rhimes to kill off the "Scandal" main character, Washington recently toyed with the idea that anything is possible for the political fixer, especially now that she could be in serious trouble.

"She's in pretty extraordinary danger," Washington said to Entertainment Weekly. "'Game of Thrones' has changed the game. Maybe I've been really misbehaved. Maybe Shonda is mad at me. It did make me feel like, 'Do I need to talk to Shonda?'"

"Scandal" returns to ABC on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015, at 9/8c p.m.
