On Wednesday, a homicide at a highway rest stop led to a high-speed chase on a Minnesota highway, shutting it down for several hours and culminating in the death of two people.

The incident took place in the early hours of the morning, and the highway has been reopened.

At around 1 a.m., police responded to a call concerning a shooting at a Maple Grove rest stop on Interstate 94, according to WCCO. Officers from the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office reported to the scene where they found a man dead from a gunshot wound.

Soon after, the suspect was spotted on the highway at the intersection of I-94 and I-694. As officers attempted to pull him over, the suspect sped away. A car chase ensured.

According to KMSP, the cars involved sped up to 115 miles per hour. A statement from the Hennepin County explained what happened in greater detail.

"The suspect from the Maple Grove incident was observed entering a vehicle. Officers received a description of the vehicle and observed this vehicle in the area of the 94 and 694 split. Officers attempted to stop this vehicle, however the vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit ensued," the statement says. "The suspect vehicle ultimately crashed near 694 East and Rice Street. The lone occupant then exited the vehicle brandishing a weapon. Officers fired and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene."

The officers involved were from the sheriff's office as well as from the Brooklyn Center Police Department. The shooting at the rest stop is being investigated as a homicide by the Maple Grove Police Department.

KSTP reports I-694, which had been closed due to police presence, has been reopened. They also add that officers from the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office, the Minnesota State Patrol, New Brighton Police and Brooklyn Center Police aside from the sheriff's office arrived on the scene.
