Florida is now officially the third most populous state in the United States, the U.S. Census Bureau said.

Thanks to Latino immigration in the pass years, Florida surpassed New York State in the population category.

"Today's news of Florida officially becoming the third most populous state is exciting," Florida's Governor, Rick Scott, said in a statement.

With over 19.8 million residents, Florida surpassed New York's population by just .1 million residents. Latino immigration is responsible for the growing population, making for 80 percent of Florida's population growth.

California is still number one and Texas remains the second largest state in America.

Florida also has the lowest unemployment rate since 2008 and has created over 700,000 jobs in the private sector over the past four years.

Gov. Rick Scott said Florida is "on the way to become the number one destination for jobs and we continue to be the best place to live, work and raise a family."

Another report shows that Florida has also shown improvements in its education system. The U.S. Department Board of Education approved a request to give English-language learners an extra full year to catch up to native classmates, which is good news for immigrants.

The state lobbied for a fairer evaluation of English-language learners test scores for a long time before getting the waiver from U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

In recent months, many children have been migrating from Central America to Florida to escape their native countries plagued with murder and gang violence.

There are 77,000 English-language learners in Maimi-Dade County alone. Since the wave of children that crossed the border from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, the county has taken in 2,000 more.
