On Jan. 6, 2014, Monica Spear and her family were traveling by car in Puerto Cabello when they were attacked.

Both Spear and ex-husband Thomas Berry were killed. Their daughter, who was also in the car with them, survived. Spear was found shielding her daughter from the gunshots. A year later, Spear was paid tribute by her followers, according to La Opinion.

Many of her fans went to the Caracas cemetery to pray and remember the beauty queen. A mass was also held.

Although 10 have been detained and three have been charged in the killing of Spear and Berry, the man who has been identified as the alleged perpetrator, Gerardo Jose Contreras, remains at large, according to the BBC.

The case is still open.

Many took to social media to talk about Spear on the anniversary of her death.

Miss Venezuela 2013 Migbelis Castellanos wrote a message about Spear on Instagram.

"Today I am flying to be #VENEZUELA like you were in 2005 @monicaspear," she said. "Knowing you was a great honor and source of pride for me. I'm glad that I let you know that. No one deserves to die at the hands of the criminal underworld. Like all Venezuelans, I also remember you today with the sweetness that characterized you. #NeverForget Rest in #PEACE monica."

Actor and singer Jencarlos Canela, who worked with Spear on "Pasión Prohibida," also shared a message on Twitter in honor of the actress.

"One year ago today, I lost a friend and I didn't talk publicly about a song that I wrote for her because it was hard to sing and I didn't do it with intention of sharing it with the public," he said. "Today in honor of her and all of those who have felt the pain of losing someone, for everyone who also feels the emptiness left by Monica, I share it. #MonicaSpear #NeverForget #Amiga."

On his website, JenCarlosNow.com, one of the main categories is "Amiga" in honor of Spear. Journalist Luis Olavarrieta said that a special in honor of Spear was supposed to re-air on Jan. 7, but that it was canceled "for fear of doing so," he said on Twitter.

When he was asked what he meant about fear and whether or not he was threatened, the journalist simply said that he was just "asked to look for substitute programming." The special is on YouTube.

In December, Spear's daughter, Maya Berry Spear, was given drawings of her parents by Venezuelan actor and portraitist Rafael Aristimuño.

"The most gorgeous Christmas gift I have ever given," he said on Twitter about the two portraits. "#MayaBerrySpear's happy face is my biggest satisfaction."
