The Los Angeles Times reports that most neighborhood streets will be filled with dainty princesses, scary witches, and amazing superheroes this Halloween as traditional costumes dominate. A survey conducted by the National Retail Federation affirms that the Halloween costume trend for 2013 leans heavily towards traditional guise; with reportedly over 5 million adults planning to don a witch costume and over 2.9 million planning to wear a Batman costume. The survey also reveals that for little tots, primary choices include princesses, animals and superheroes.

U.S. consumers are expected to shell out $2.6 billion for Halloween costumes, with the average Joe or Jane spending about $75.03 to enjoy a full Halloween celebration. The spending spree is down $4.79, compared with 2012's Halloween price tag at $79.82.

Going for conservative costumes this year is a welcome breather, opines Karen Grizzard, owner of Party Station in Newport News. She explains, "They're going more conservative again; thank goodness, we're kind of getting away from the sexy look. They had gone way too far with the sexy thing. They had pre-teen costumes that were sexy," reports the Los Angeles Times. The biggest sellers in Grizzard's store include vampire, witches and superheroes costumes.

However, with the pervasive presence of social media, it is not surprising that some popular costumes include dressing up as one's favorite profile picture, culled from the Instagram, Twitter and Facebook profiles of celebrities, according to the Daily Beast. Some of these popular guises include Miley Cyrus in the "Wrecking Ball" video, wherein the singer wore white midriff top and skimpy underwear; or Oprah Winfrey in her cheery, life-is-great self, playing with a hula hoop.

Television characters are also a popular choice, such as Walter White from "Breaking Bad," the Governor from "The Walking Dead," or a Red Wedding guest (corpse) from "Game of Thrones."  Of course, the most popular TV costume of all time is the zombie disguise, especially since the hit AMC series "The Walking Dead" is back on air on its fourth season.

So hey, would you like a trick, or a treat?
