The New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks are scheduled to play in the biggest game of the NFL year more than a week from today.

So many great matchups between these teams will be shown on the field. The head coaching contest between Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick and the "Legion of Boom" against the Patriots passing attack. Obviously Marshawn Lynch against the Patriots defensive line will be huge as well.

But, we can't overlook the Patriots rushing attack against the Seahawks front four.

The Patriots have had an inconsistent running game this entire season. Not once this entire season have the Patriots run for 100 yards in back-to-back games. This postseason is a perfect indication of the Patriots rushing attack. Against the Baltimore Ravens, the Patriots only ran for a dismal 14 yards on 13 carries. In the AFC Championship game, against the Indianapolis Colts, the Patriots ran for 177 yards.

The Patriots running game is as unpredictable as it gets.

During the regular season, the Patriots rushing offense ranked 18th overall in yards. Jonas Gray was the Patriots leading runner with 412 rushing yards and five touchdowns, but he has just 24 total carries since Week 11. The Seahawks have the No. 3 ranked rush defense in the NFL, so the Patriots will have their hands full.

After the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to part ways with LeGarrette Blount in November, the Patriots quickly signed the young back. Blount knows the Patriots system, having played for the team last season. Blount is now the featured No. 1 running back for the Patriots, and he will have a huge responsibility on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Seahawks have by far the league's best pass defense. Richard Sherman, Byron Maxwell, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas complete an elite secondary known as the "Legion of Boom." Quarterback Tom Brady will be asked to make throws, and tight end Rob Gronkowski will have a big responsibility making catches. But the Patriots need a balanced offensive attack. If Blount is unable to establish a strong running game for the Patriots, it puts the team in a bad situation where they will pass far too often.

The same also goes for the Seahawks. Marshawn Lynch is arguably the best running back in the game today, and he will have a huge responsibility leading the Seahawks offense.

Blount is certainly capable of having a great game, but he rarely has back-to-back great performances. Last postseason we saw Blount run wild for 166 yards and four touchdowns, against the Colts again, but fell apart against the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship game with just six yards. The last time Blount had two consecutive 100 yard games was 2011, when he was a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It remains to be seen what kind of impact Blount will have or if Gray will even be active, but another Patriots running back who will definitely get playing time is Shane Vereen. Vereen had the second most rushing yards on the Patriots this year with just 391, but he's an outstanding receiver for a running back. This year Vereen had 52 catches and 447 receiving yards.

For the Patriots to even have a chance against the best defensive team in the NFL, they have to be able to establish the run.
