The thought of hosting or attending a Super Bowl party may be challenging your already-fragile New Year's resolution to eat healthier. Believe it or not, there are better alternatives to greasy, salty, bagged snacks and processed food spreads. 'Homegating' is a way to not only bring the excitement of tailgating to your home, but also serve satisfying, healthy foods.

Marc Payero, the Executive Chef of the National Football League headquarters in New York City, spoke to Latin Post and offered up ideas for the perfect Super Bowl homegating event.

"When you do a homegating party, you want to have sharing and opportunity to watch football," Payero said. "Get started early so that when game time comes around, you're all in front of the TV ready to go." Payero recommended using the NFL Homegating app, which has creative ways to invite your guests as well as healthy, delicious recipes.

Payero recommends getting your guests involved to accommodate everyone's preferences. "The best thing about homegating is that when you invite friends to your party, you can recommend, 'hey why don't you bring a dish, maybe make some hummus or salsa.'"

"A lot of people may bring chips and salsa," said Payero. "That's fine, but why not make them baked chips, or make a fresh salsa. Use vegetable and fresh ingredients. It's a little more labor-intensive but it helps out because of the freshness and health benefits and you have some control over the ingredients as opposed to something that has been sitting on the shelf."

Marc's own passion for food began in his Queens childhood home, where he helped his mom cook Dominican specialties. At 14, he got his first restaurant job as a busboy. "What I enjoyed the most was the hustle and bustle of the kitchen."

At a Super Bowl party, using cutlery will cost you a 15-yard penalty. "When you do a homegating party, you want to serve smaller items, foods you don't eat with a fork and knife, but finger foods," Payero recommended. "Keep the food items small so that everybody can enjoy them."

Payero is also a huge football fan, and bringing the spirit of the game into the party is mandatory for a Super Bowl event.

"Show off your team spirit with glassware and dishes that have your team logo on them so that way it becomes a football team headquarters." And, of course, "wear your team apparel."

The key to a fun Super Bowl party is keeping things simple. "You don't want to spend all day in the kitchen," he said. "You want to watch football, entertain and spend time with your family and friends."
