Katie Holmes has her eyes on one of the last open roles in the Fifty Shades of Grey film, The National Enquirer reports.

According to the tabloid magazine, Holmes hopes to sex up her image by portraying Elena Lincoln in the film adaptation of E.L. James' erotic novel. Elena is a platinum blonde billionaire and Christian Grey's business partner. Elena and Christian, played by Jamie Dornan, also have a long relationship of sadomasochism and bondage.

"She's looking at this as the role of a lifetime for her," a National Enquirer source credited as "a pal" said. "It will shock a lot of people, but she thinks Hollywood will sit up and take notice."

Holmes, 34, does not exactly fit the part. In addition to having the wrong hair color, Holmes is also younger than Elena, who is described as a woman in her late 30s or early 40s. According to The National Enquirer's source, however, Holmes has spent hours at the gym in order to "tone herself up for the part."

"She knows she has to reinvent herself," the source said.

Charlie Hunnam was originally cast as Christian Grey. According to the tabloid, this deterred Holmes from trying to get a role in the film. She did not think producers would want to put her and Hunnam in sex scenes together considering they already did so in 2002's Abandon. Now that Dornan has replaced Hunnam, however, Holmes reportedly thinks she has a chance.

According The National Enquirer's sources, the move would make Holme's ex-husband Tom Cruise "fume."
