Western Digital recently sent out an email message to their clients mentioning the data loss errors that their external hard drives had been experiencing, as one sign of incompatibility with the OS X Mavericks 10.9.

ZDNet wrote that the email was sent out last weekend with customers posting in forums their bundle of issues that are also related to driver problems with Thunderbolt and other arrays. A spokesperson of the company said that the external hard drive problems happen when users update to the new Apple OS.

As initial solution, the representative suggested to delay any upgrades at the moment to avoid further problems to transpire up to the point of data loss.

What if you upgraded to the Apple OS X Mavericks already?

It has been helpful for many to stumble upon some troubleshooting tips and steps to provide an answer to such technical issues. In fact, Computer World blogs shared an interesting list of what you can possibly do if you encounter this particular error with the new and modern operating system.

Relax. Your data may still be in there and did not totally vanish. Hence, to prove this chance better, avoid reformatting your drive impulsively. If you do, then it would be a lot tougher to recover information using data recovery software. Check with Apple for updates of the Western Digital or LaCie tools for drive software.

To be safe, back up your data to a separate drive, if possible, a non-Mavericks Mac PC. If everything else fails, then you can just revert to your old operating system state before you even installed the OS X Mavericks. You can do this by using Recovery tools of the OS X.

Above all, it is best not to panic. Besides, even in life, nothing ever gets solved well and fast when you let panic rule you. What more with dealing with some data loss once in a while?
