The price tags on the incoming Xbox One and Playstation 4 game consoles could be slashed sooner rather than later, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotich said this week.

"They've made more investments in the back office than ever before. I think you've got lots of efficiency in manufacturing costs that could potentially drive hardware prices down sooner in the cycle," Kotick said about Microsoft and Sony, according to Gamespot. "There's no indication, from our perspective, that you're going to see anything other than a very successful next seven or eight years."

Despite the many similarities between the Xbox One and Playsation 4 as the rivals continue to fight for the top spot in the gaming world, one of the major differences is in price. The Playstation 4, currently priced at $500, is $100 more than the Xbox One. Although it seems to be a major advantage for Xbox One considering that there is not any noticeable feature of the PS4 that would warrant an extra $100, this is not too surprising. The Xbox 360 was $300/400 when it was released in 2005 while the PS3 was $500/$600 when it was released.

What makes things even more complicated is that the Xbox One and PS4 might not drop in sales simultaneously. The price of the Xbox 360 remained unchanged for more than a year and a half while the PS3 was marked down about a half year after it was released.

If history repeats itself, we'll see a drop in the price of the PS4 sometime in the middle of 2014. If Kotick is correct, however, that could be even sooner.
