Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has not fought for more than a year, and it is still unknown at this point whether or not the mixed martial arts superstar will fight inside the Octagon again.

But in an interview with ESPN, Firas Zahabi revealed that St-Pierre has been training hard over the past several weeks. The 33-year-old will also start undergoing sparring sessions this month, but Zahabi quickly added that it remains to be seen whether or not the former welterweight kingpin will return from a long layoff.

"He's doing amazing. We're training on a regular basis," Zahabi said of St-Pierre. "We're training on a regular basis. Not fight training -- training for fun. He should be starting sparring in February. We're not going to rush it. We're going to see how it goes."

St-Pierre has not fought since deciding to vacate the title following his split decision win over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 in November 2013. Three months after the win against Hendricks, the Canadian superstar took a blow as he suffered the second ACL injury of his career, and underwent surgery that required at least six months of rehab.

St-Pierre also busted his knee in 2011, which also put him on the sidelines for a significant amount of time. Zahabi said that his fighter is feeling much better compared to the first time he underwent knee surgery, but he insisted that they are making sure St-Pierre is 100 percent healthy before even thinking of making a comeback.

Zahabi said that they are taking a cautious approach to avoid committing the same mistake they had the first time St-Pierre suffered an ACL tear in his right knee.

St-Pierre successfully defended his title against Carlos Condit, Nick Diaz and Hendricks after recovering from his first knee surgery, but Zahabi admitted that they rushed St-Pierre's comeback in 2012.

"We were really on the fence about coming back so quickly," Zahabi said. "We ended up doing it and we won three fights, but in my opinion, it was too fast. His body wasn't ready yet. Those fights were good, but they were a little messy. This time around, I want him to be 100 percent healthy, performing well and then he can decide if he wants to come back."
